"Weighing in on the Internet"
R.F. (4-29-10) Interesting exchange between Rollie Henkes and Mrs. Woods. It seems everyone with a message believes they need not only a Web site, but a Facebook and Twitter site as well. You could be glued to the computer all day sorting it all out. "Short bursts of truth," notwithstanding, much of the information is trivial. Like fast food, we're becoming a fast-info nation, and I don't think the fare is very nutritous. It's taking time away from reading content with some meat on its bones. R.F., St. Paul, MN |

A recent discussion from our Facebook page -
"Economy vs Progress in Stewardship" N.W. (3-12-10) - Does anyone see any signs of progress in individual stewardship of natural resources (i.e. private prairie or woodland restoration/reconstruction) "slowing" during the economic down turn? I am a little concerned as to reports to me about native seed businesses experiencing significant decreases in business the past year. |

J.S (3-14-10) - Being in the industry, I'd confirm that business was slow. Much of our work is seen as financially optional - especially to individual landowners. Yet landscape restoration, mitigation, and native installations are becoming increasingly 'mandated' on the government/commercial spectrum But from my personal work and involvement with The Prairie Enthusiasts, I beleive that individual stewardship is holding steady. Individuals who are already active/self-educating are aware of the coming environmental challenges. Generally, people with steward-vision are farsighted enough to value and continue the investments they've made in the landscape. N.W. (3-15-10) - I agree J. - that people who have already made the investment of time and resources will very likely continue these investments. That is a positive! I am concerned, however that economics can possibly stall future (at least "near" future) increases of progress in this area of stewardship. But, as you mention...individual stewardship holding steady is a heartening effect at present. J.S. (3-15-10) - That's where outreach and communication are key.... Showing people that the work can be done themselves is critical. There aren't enough private contractors and/or the money to hire them to do the work that needs to be done. People need need to get involoved/connected to their landscapes. N.W. (3-15-10) - Amen to that! |
